Roll for Montage

Many campaigns contain random encounter tables to help account for time and treasure while the party travels from town to town.  But some GMs hate random encounters, and many players hate slowing down the action to battle a few random wolves who are irrelevant to the story.  

So, instead of random encounters, let’s roll for a travel montage where there are both positive and negative rewards to the travel, but won’t take up extensive time with unnecessary combat encounters or role-play.  The party could have a run-in with a village inciting a riot against them, win at cards, become wounded when a group of bandits try to ambush them, etc.  All of these quickly resolved in just a few rolls of the dice.
